SYNOPSIS
He was rocked to the end by the slow black river of jazz. And on that rhythm he built his artistic and human story, “the long, beautiful, carefree adventure” that was his life.
It is he, Domenico Rotella aka Mimmo, born in 1918, who weaves the dialogue with those who knew him well: friends, critics, artists, gallery owners and family.
In the documentary dedicated to the master there is the long ‘posthumous’ chat with Germano Celant who frames Rotella’s work within the historical and social context of contemporary art movements along with Pierre Restany, one of the first to believe in the perennial modernity of Rotella’s work and to include his name among the members of the Nouveau Réalisme born in France in the 1960s.
And there is the recollection of colleagues, such as Christo and Alviani, the amusing and entertaining anecdotes of a shared boheme in New York or Rome in the 1950s when rotella began stealing posters from city walls and tearing them down. A loot made of paper, color, advertising and cinema. A new way of reading reality that makes decollage part of art history.
