SYNOPSIS
Between the late 1970s and the early 1980s, Italian design was swept by a lively movement of renewal centred on the postmodern avant-garde groups Alchimia and Memphis. During the 1980s Ugo La Pietra forged a path of his own, theorising Neo-Eclecticism, which he promoted through conferences, exhibitions and the magazines he edited: Area, Abitare con Arte and Artigianato tra Arte e Design.
Ugo La Pietra was born in Bussi sul Tirino (Pescara) in 1938 and graduated in Architecture from the Politecnico di Milano in 1964. Active in Italian art since 1960, in 1962 he co-founded the Gruppo del Cenobio, associated with Sign Art (pittura segnica). He took part in the European Radical Architecture movement and edited the magazines In, Progettare InPiù, Brera Flash and Fascicolo. In 1973 he was one of the founders of Global Tools, an experimental workshop and counter-school of architecture and design that brought together the leading figures of Radical Architecture. He went on to pursue his research across a range of fields: urban furniture, artistic craftsmanship and film.
