SYNOPSIS
“Sulle tracce di Maria Lai” is a circular story that begins and ends in Ulassai, the village in the wild heart of Sardinia where Maria Lai (1919-2013) was born and where she returned to live in the last years of her life. The documentary is the reconstruction of her extraordinary figure as a woman and artist through the voices of her niece, friends, collaborators, artists, art historians. It is the discovery of a very rich and unique artistic production: from the naturalism of her early works, to the turning point in the Sixties – with the “Telai”, the “Tele cucite”, the “Geografie” – to “Legarsi alla montagna”, the collective action carried out with the citizens of Ulassai in 1981, which anticipates relational art by a decade. It is a journey to Ogliastra, where Maria Lai continues to live: in the memory of the inhabitants of Ulassai, in the Stazione dell’Arte Museum, in the works of public art scattered around the town, in the energy of the young public administration.
